Global settings

Global settings allow you to customize language, date format, time format, timezone, and more.

To change global settings:

  1. In the upper right corner, click your profile image.
  2. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3. On the left navigation menu, click Global Settings.
  4. Customize your settings.
  5. Click Save.

Option Description
Language This option allows you to select the language that you want to use. It is possible to set up 3 languages: English, German, and French.
Date format You can change how the date appears on VNCtalk. It is possible to set up 4 date formats:
DD.MM.YYYY. Day-Month-Year with leading zeros and points (.) as the separator characters (17.02.2025);
MM/DD/YYYY. Month-Day-Year with leading zeros and slashes (/) as the separator characters (02/17/2025);
DD/MM/YYYY. Day-Month-Year with leading zeros and slashes (/) as the separator characters (17/02/2025).
YYYY-MM-DD. Year-Month-Day with leading zeros and dashes (-) as the separator characters (2025-02-17).
Time format You can change how time appears on VNCtalk. It is possible to set up 2 time formats:
12-hour format contains an AM or PM, where "AM" indicates times from midnight until noon and "PM" indicates times from noon until midnight.
24-hour format is based on the 24-hour clock that uses the numbers 00:00 to 23:59 (midnight is 00:00).
Timezone You can change the time zone in VNCtalk so that it matches your current location.
Send message with ENTER VNCtalk automatically sends a message when you hit the "Enter" key while composing. However, you can change the behavior by default and make it start a new line, and keep composing the same message.
To change the action assigned to the "Enter" key by default, switch off the Send message with ENTER toggle.
Add date stamp along with time stamp If you enable the "Add date stamp along with time stamp" option, VNCtalk will then add a date to the time stamp of the messages.
Allow screen share preview for the presenter By default, the option is disabled. If you enable the option, you can select what to share:
Your entire screen lets you show everything on your screen;
Application window lets you share an open window like a specific app you have open;
Chrome tab lets you share a single Chrome browser tab, hiding other tabs and windows. This option requires the Chrome browser.

Notification & sound settings

VNCtalk offers different ways to receive and manage notifications. These settings include how, when, and where your notifications appear, custom settings for chats, channels, broadcasts, sounds, and so on.

To change notification and sound settings:

  1. In the upper right corner, click your profile image.
  2. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3. On the left navigation menu, click Notification & Sound.
  4. Customize your settings.
  5. Click Save.

Option Description
Chats, channels, mentions, and broadcast notifications You can control which types of notifications you want to enable.
Under the GET NOTIFIED section, click Change and select which types of notifications you would like to receive.
Notification badge color You can customize the color of the notification badge that appears on the notification center icon when you have an active notification. By default, the notification badge is red.
Sticky notifications You can choose whether or not to display message previews in banner notifications:
No notifications. If you select this variant, you will not see a message notification in a browser when someone sends you a message;
Show non sticky notifications. If you select this variant, you will see a message notification in a browser when someone sends you a message, but the notification will disappear in some time;
Show sticky notifications. If you select this variant, you will see a message notification in a browser when someone sends you a message and the notification will be visible until you click it or close it.
Note: The "Sticky notifications" option does not work in the Firefox browser.
Email notifications You can receive email notifications to alert you about new message(s). The email notifications suggest 2 setting options:
Email Notification period. Allows selecting the period for the notifications;
Email Notification repeats. Allows selecting the notification repeats.
Sound settings You can select how you would like to get notified of a new message or incoming audio/ video call.
Global mute VNCtalk gives you the choice to mute all notifications within the application. In the top menu of VNCtalk, click the loudspeaker icon and it will turn red, confirming that you mute all notifications. To disable the global mute: click the loudspeaker icon again.

Video meeting settings

You can adjust your camera and microphone, customize the background, check the sound, and more.

To change video meeting settings:

  1. In the upper right corner, click your profile image.
  2. Select Audio & Video Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3. On the left navigation menu, switch between Video Meeting Settings, Audio & Video, and Background.
  4. Customize your settings.
  5. Click Save.

Option Description
Behavior on the top/ bottom bar You can customize the top and bottom bars in a video meeting. By default, they are always visible during a video meeting. But you can customize them and they will be visible only if you hover the pointer over them.
Video quality You can select your preferred video quality:
High Definition and Standard Definition options are appropriate when you do not have issues with the internet connection;
Low Definition or Low Bandwidth options are appropriate when you have some issues with the internet connection.
Show confirmation box when leaving video conference You can enable the pop-up window to confirm that you want to leave a video meeting.
Background You can select the desired virtual background while in a video meeting.

Audio & video settings

  1. In the upper right corner, click the profile icon.
  2. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3. On the left navigation menu, select Audio & Video.
  4. Customize your settings.
  5. Click Save.

Option Description
Input The dropdown menu may suggest the types of input devices in case you have external headphones connected. For example, if you use a laptop and you do not have external headphones connected, the laptop microphone will be used for the input sound. In this case, only the default option is available in the dropdown menu. But if you connect the external headphones, you will be able to select them from the dropdown menu.
Level To check that your sound and microphone work properly, just say something.
Output The dropdown menu may suggest the types of output devices in case you have external headphones connected. For example, if you use a laptop and you do not have external headphones connected, the laptop microphone will be used for the output sound. In this case, only the default option is available in the dropdown menu. But if you want to use your headphones, you can connect them and select them from the dropdown menu.

Security and privacy settings

You can control your privacy by making certain information private or public.

To change privacy & security settings:

  1. In the upper right corner, click the profile icon.
  2. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3. On the left navigation menu, select Privacy & Security.
  4. Customize your settings.
  5. Click Save.

Option Description
Read receipts The "Read Receipts" option allows you to see whether the recipient has read your message or seen your image/ video or not.
Check marks will appear next to each message you send. Here's what each one indicates:
The message was sent;
The recipient has read your message.
Inform about typing If you enable the "Inform about typing" option, other users will be able to see if you are typing a message at the moment.
Publish last activity If you enable the "Publish last activity" option, other users will be able to see when you were online last time.
Do not load insecure content You have the option to disable blocking of insecure content.

Remove OMEMO device

You can have up to 5 OMEMO-encrypted devices.

When you hit the maximum number of OMEMO encrypted devices, you can't log in to VNCtalk with a new device. In that case, you'll get the notification stating "Exceeded OMEMO limit. Please deselect one of the devices first to enable encryption from the current device":

To disable one of the previous devices:

  1. In the upper right corner, click the profile icon.
  2. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3. On the left navigation menu, select Privacy & Security.
  4. Under the OMEMO DEVICES section, click the trash bin icon next to the device you want to disable.
  5. When prompted, click OK to confirm that you want to delete the device.

Then refresh the page so the current device will be added automatically.

Transfer secure chats

After you log in to VNCtalk, your device is registered in the system and assigned an ID. The ID looks as follows: 10161 Mobile Android 2021-02-24. Where:

  • 10161 — is the device ID;
  • Mobile — is the hardware type;
  • Android — is the operating system of the hardware type;
  • 2021-02-24 — is the log-in date from the device.

To check the device ID in your VNCtalk account:

  1. In the upper right corner, click the profile icon.
  2. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3. On the left navigation menu, select Privacy & Security.
  4. Under the OMEMO DEVICES section, you can find all devices registered in the system.

Imagine that you enable E2E encryption for a group chat in the VNCtalk Web Client. Let's call the group chat "Testing" in this imaginary situation. Then you install the VNCtalk Desktop Client and log in to the application for the first time. When you open the "Testing" group chat, you should see that you cannot read the previous messages because they are encrypted:

Can't decrypt the message - not intended for the current device

To read the previous messages, you should transfer them from the VNCtalk Web Client to the Desktop Client. To do that, follow the steps below:

  1. Log in to VNCtalk:

    • on a device that you want to transfer encrypted messages from
    • on a device that you want to transfer encrypted messages to
  2. In the VNCtalk app on the device that you want to transfer messages from, click your profile image.

  3. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  4. On the left navigation menu, select Privacy & Security.
  5. Click SELECT CHATS next to "Transfer secure chats".
  6. Select a chat that you want to transfer encrypted messages from and click START at the bottom. You should see the notification stating "Started discovering nearby devices".

Go back to VNCtalk on a device to which you want to transfer the encrypted messages. Click Accept in the Transfer secure chats popup window. You should see the notification stating "The chats are transferred successfully". After the transfer is over, you can read encrypted messages.

Feature settings

The "Enable keyboard on mobile" option does not work for Web/ Desktop Client. "Enable Whiteboard" and "Enable MCB" options are available only for users with the admin rights.

VNCtalk has a lot of useful features that you may use daily in many tasks. However, some features and chat addons can be enabled and disabled.

To change feature settings:

  1. In the upper right corner, click the profile icon.
  2. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3. On the left navigation menu, select Features.
  4. Customize your settings.
  5. Click Save.

Option Description
Rich Text Format If you enable Rich Text Format, you will have the toolbar with icons for editing and formatting a text.
Enable/ disable keyboard on mobile You can turn off or disable a keyboard on your phone.
Enable/disable default VNCtalk features You can activate or deactivate the following VNCtalk features:
Channels;
Socials;
Broadcasts;
Whiteboard;
MCB (Multi Conference Board);
VNCpad.
Once you've disabled the "Channels", "Socials", and "Broadcasts" features, they disappear from the feature menu. Once you've disabled the VNCpad feature, it disappears from the header menu of the chat.

Appearance settings

You can change VNCtalk appearance settings such as theme, background for chat, and font size.

To change appearance settings:

  1. In the upper right corner, click the profile icon.
  2. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3. On the left navigation menu, select Appearance.
  4. Customize your settings.
  5. Click Save.

Option Description
Theme There are 3 themes in the application: VNCtalk, Purple, and Orange.
Font size You can make your font size smaller or larger. Drag the slider left and right to choose one of the font size options.
Background for chats VNCtalk allows you to personalize your chats by changing your background. You can replace your background with one of the images provided or with one of your own choice. To use your own image, click on the plus symbol in the Background section and then select the image that you would like to upload from your device. Make sure it's a .JPG, .PNG, or .BMP file.
